October 17, 2023 - Annual Foliage Flight
Day One - Part Three
Stephen A. Bean Airport to Millinocket, Maine

From Bean Airport, I continued northeast into central Maine.

Approaching another big lake:  Flagstaff Lake.

That's Bigelow Mountain (4,160 feet) on the right there.

An interesting rectagular patch of evergreens, interspersed with some yellow trees.

There are are many lakes and rivers.  I believe this one is the Kennebec River.  I followed it north.

P20

Still following the Kennebec River.

The Kennebec River led to the Harris Station Dam and Indian Pond.

Squaw Mountain (3,262 feet) stands by itself to the east.

Then I came to big Moosehead Lake.  Biggest lake in Maine.  I was at the southern tip.

The little town of Greenville, Maine.  Population 1,437.  Greenville is a popular name for cities.  I know there is one in South Carolina and Mississippi.  Other states too.

Greenville is the historic gateway to the north country and a center for outdoor recreation in the area.

A closer shot of Greenville.  There is a seaplane base down in that little harbor.

Just east of town is the good-sized airport, Greenville Municipal Airport.

A closer look at Greenville Muni.

Looking out over Moosehead Lake.  I didn't fly the lake today because I knew I'd be back.

Now heading almost due east straight for my final destination today:  Millinocket.

Passing by an area that must have been recently logged.

There is Maine's tallest mountain, big Mount Katahdin (5,268 feet) in the distance.  It almost marks the end of the Appalachian Trail.  I'm almost to Millinocket.

And there it is!  Millinocket Municipal Airport.  I know it well, having based here last year.  In the foreground is the abandoned Paper Mill, the town's leading employer at the time, which closed in 2008.

A good look at the town proper.  Population 4,114.

A close-up of Main Street.

Millinocket has two long runways.  A little bumpy but not too bad.

A shot of the airport with Mount Katahdin in the background.

Parked in front of the FBO building.

Tied down for the night.

The first night I stayed in the Katahdin Inn, which is an easy walk from the airport, although the nice airport manager gave me a ride.  The Inn doesn't look like much from the outside but it had a big atrium with pool inside and the rooms were fine.

Inside the Inn was this map of the Appalachian Trail which ends at Baxter Peak, at the base of Mount Katahdin, southeast side.

My track for today.
